DC Comics is returning to Tim Burton’s Batman universe for a brand-new miniseries Batman ‘89: Echoes, which will continue the adventures of Michael Keaton’s Dark Knight on the page.
In Batman ‘89 by Sam Hamm, Joe Quinones, Clayton Cowles, and Leonardo Ito, the story picked up following the events of Batman Returns, as Harvey Dent’s crusade to take down Batman amidst chaos in Gotham City was featured. The story introduced Batman ‘89’s version of Robin and saw Harvey Dent become Two-Face. The comic ended with Dent’s defeat and Batman figuring out his next plans. Now, DC Comics is revealing what will happen next.
The new Batman ‘89 Echoes miniseries will see Gotham City continue on in a city without Batman. The Caped Crusader’s whereabouts are unknown, leaving normal Gothamites to take on crime. At the same time, the book is set to introduce a new version of Harley Quinn, who will play a vital role in the story. The story is also set to introduce two more Batman villains. Jonathan Crane’s Scarecrow will appear in the series, as will Firefly — but the latter’s appearance may come with a significant twist..
Batman ‘89: Echoes #1 features main cover art from Quinones, providing a closer look at Batman, Harley Quinn, and the Scarecrow over the backdrop of Arkham Asylum. Riley Rossmo’s cardstock variant features The Dark Knight standing over The Joker amidst one of his attacks. The Bat-Cycle can be seen in an action figure variant from Todd McFarlane Toys. Doug Braithwaite’s 1:25 variant features Batman diving into action with his long cape flowing in the night sky. Lastly, Baldemar Rivas’ 1:50 variant features the Batmobile during a fiery chase as the iconic vehicle drives through Gotham City.
