The Spawn Universe is expanding in a new Rat City spin-off, which takes the classic Image Comic character and shakes him up in a futuristic blender for a new kind of story set in the popular comic book universe.
Spawn is the creation of legendary comic book creator Todd McFarlane as the titular hero has starred in comics, movies, television series, and numerous other spinoffs. The long-term success of Spawn continues to this day, with the character (and several variants) still starring in popular comics from various creators. With the world of Spawn continuing to grow, a new version of the hero will debut in a new comic called Rat City.
Rat City from Erica Schultz and Ze Carlos follows Peter Cairn, a former soldier turned amputee who gains his Spawn powers after getting a blood transfusion from the original Hellspawn, Al Simmons. As a result, Cairn transforms into a cyberpunk version of Spawn, with a high-tech body resembling Spawn’s classic look. Rat City will take the world of Spawn in a much more science-fiction direction and serve as a new avenue of storytelling for the franchise.
Rat City #1 features a main cover by Ze Carlos, featuring the first look at Peter Cairn’s futuristic Spawn. While he has the same style as the original Spawn, including an oversized cape, this version is filled with technological advancements, giving them a unique style. Check out the cover for Rat City #1, followed by a text solicit for the issue.
Peter Cairn is an ex-soldier, an amputee, and a Hellspawn in a post-war future. But Peter's not dead like Al. Peter got his Spawn powers from the nanites in his prosthetic legs—nanites that were affected when Al Simmons initiated his necroplasmic detonation in the present. Al had no clue that the effects would ripple across not just space, and but time as well.
Take a closer look at Peter Cairn with and without his mask in promotional art for the series, further showcasing the Spawn of the future.

Considering several comic book heroes and villains have had successful adaptations with future versions of the characters, such as Spider-Man 2099, it makes sense to see the Spawn Universe expand in a similar way. Readers can pick up Rat City #1 at CaptCan Comics when the series premieres on April 10, 2024. Make sure to order future issues of the series to ensure you don’t miss out on what’s coming next in the exciting world of Rat City.
